A group to look at our the history of Tamworth and the surrounding area.
Tamworth for a time was a major city in England with an ancient past but in the 1960's became an overspill town for Birmingham.
How did that come about?
Please note we are meeting on the second Tuesday of the month.

| 8th September | Repton | During the dark ages when we were ruled by the Anglo Saxons, Mercia was the central kingdom in King Offa and Ethelfleda’s time. Tamworth was one of the principal towns / Capitals of the kingdom. Nearby another town (Repton ) was also a principal town that got captured by the Vikings who occupied for several years, using its early church as part of its defences. Repton lies about 20 miles a away, just past Burton and the church has a Saxon Crypt under the church that was used as a burial site for some of the earliest kings although these were removed before the Vikings arrived. A guided tour has been arranged if enough members are interested. in visiting the church on the 8th You can go via the A38 or through A513, A444 and we could car share. | 10th February | St John's Church | We will start the year with a talk by Robert Watson. He has written a book about Wigginton. He is going to talk about a Lady from Wigginton who left a fund that benefits Tamworth residents to this day We will meet at the church at 2:00 p.m. We can also talk about what we want to do this year and places we can visit. |
| 14th April | A visit to Roman site at Wall | A guided tour has been arranged of the Roman site at Wall. Meet at the site carpark at 14:00 Cost £3.00 Please let Tony Harris know is you plan to attend |
| 10th March | Discussion about the Roman site at Wall | Meeting at St John's to talk about the Roman wall in Wall and Tamworth at that time, as it didnt become Tamworth Until after the Romans had left the country! |
